The beauty of the state of Georgia, located on the Southern East Coast of the United States, is world renowned. Georgia brings to mind stately magnolias, yummy peaches and the graciousness of the South all with a warm climate and a beautiful coastline. Northern Georgia is a great part of the state to take a trip to and can be a great time for the whole family.

Traveling to northern Georgia presents you with a boatload of options. This part of the state is well-known for the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain range that is home to peaks that rise above 4000 ft! The Blue Ridge, Georgia area also houses Lake Blue Ridge, the Toccoa River, and other small streams and bodies of water that are perfect for fishing, camping, hiking or just relaxing. Whitewater rafting is also popular in Blue Ridge, and horseback riding makes a perfect accompaniment to the areas scenic views.

Finding accommodations for your get away is easy, no matter what sort of lodgings you are in the mood to stay at. Favorite Hikes in Upper California

Beaches, Hollywood, sun and fun, this is the image most people have of California. The far north of California, however, offers hikes that rival anything else the state has to offer.

Favorite Hikes in Upper California

Unlike the crowded coastline, the upper reaches of California presents a more relaxed, back to nature feel. Frankly, most people living in the south of the state don’t know what they are missing. The beauty of old growth forests, rivers such as the Russian and miles of woodlands are something to behold and hiking is the best way to see it.

I usually save the best for last, but the Caves at Lava Beds National Monument simply are too good. Ironically, the caves are not caves. Instead, they are huge lava tubes created when lava flowed over this area in the very north of California. This place is so amazing, words seem like a cheap substitute for actually going. The lava tubes are large and you are going to walk through them. The best and most jaw dropping is the Catacombs Cave. The tube is about 7,000 feet long and just awe inspiring. You should also have a go at the Hopkins Chocolate and Blue Grotto caves. Bring a sweater and get ready for a memorable experience.

Moving to the coast, we come to the Redwood National Park. Again, a personal favorite. There are numerous excellent hiking areas, but we are here to see big trees. The aptly named Tall Trees Grove is the place we want. In classic hiking terms, the route is only 3 miles roundtrip and should take an hour and a half. Hah! This is the place of many of the tallest trees in the world, many topping out over 300 feet. The trees are so large, the base can be as much as fifteen feet across. That is probably wider then the room you are sitting in now. With such heights, you are going to be looking up a lot and walking very slowly. Count on turning this hike into a three hour event at a minimum.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is located to the east of Redding. As you might have guessed from the name, the park has a history of volcanic activity, eruptions and lots of geothermal activity. Any of the hiking routes in the park will pass muster, but I am a sucker for volcanoes. Prior to Mount St. Helens hogging the limelight, Lassen Peak was the last volcano to erupt in the United States. Okay, it was 1914, but it still counts. More importantly, you can hike it! It is 5 miles roundtrip and takes two or three hours. Unfortunately, you have to hit it between July and September because it is closed the rest of the time. As an aside, you can also try the Bumpass Hell hike. I know nothing about it, but the name makes it worth a go if nothing else.

Hiking in the forgotten north of California offers you, me and everyone an opportunity to see part of the state that most people don’t realize exists. Whether you want to hike down a lava shoot, stare up at giant trees or climb a volcano, you can do it all here.

One-Tank Trip from Columbus, Ohio

With gas prices the way they are, many people are looking for getaways they can take on one tank of gas. We found one such one-tank trip to be taken from Columbus. Ohio. The destination? Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia, with stops at several museums on the way to or from Oglebay Park. All this in a 256 mile roundtrip drive on Interstate 70 from Columbus, Ohio.

Oglebay Park is a 1,650-acre park in Wheeling, West Virginia packed with a sights and activities, meaning you're never bored. If you're into golf, Oglebay Park has three championship golf courses from which to choose (one designed by Arnold Palmer). There are 11 tennis courts, a large outdoor pool, horse stables, miniature golf, walking trails, The Mansion Museum, a zoo, ski slope, planetarium, gardens, greenhouse, outdoor theatre and Schenk Lake, where you can fish, go pedal boating, or watch nightly fountain shows.

The 16-acre gardens alone are worth the drive. In the Spring you'll find 50,000 tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, while the Fall brings you a dazzling display of mums.

Are you the type of person who likes holiday light displays? Be sure to visit Oglebay in late November and December for their light show, which, incidentally, is one of America's large holiday light shows. Over a million lights are on display for this six-mile holiday drive.

Lodging at Ogebay Park can be found at Wilson Lodge, located on a hilltop in Ogelbay Park. You can find cottages for groups and large families, as well as standard rooms and deluxe suites. The lodge includes an indoor pool, dining facilities (with casual as well as fine dining), tanning beds and massage therapy facilities. Situated on a hilltop in the heart of Oglebay is the exceptional Wilson Lodge. Facilities at the lodge include casual and fine dining, an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, tanning bed and massage therapy facilities.

On your way to and from Oglebay Park, be sure to stop in Newark, Ohio, 27 miles east of Columbus, off Interstate 70, on Ohio route 79. There you'll find the National Heisey Glass Museum, which has handmade crystal on display from the Heisey Glass company. Also check out the Zane Grey Musueum, approximately 67 miles east of columbus (take U.S. 70 east to U.S. 40).

If you want a quick one-day, one-tank trip from Columbus, Ohio, head west on Interstate 70 to Clifton, Ohio, (approximately 50 miles) where you'll find the Clifton Gorge, a 130-foot-deep canyon that's part of John Bryan State Park. Definitely a great place for a hike or picnic.

Remember when you were a kid and you your parents loaded you into the car, train or plane for a wonderful adventure? It didn't matter if you were just going across the country to visit your Grandma or seeing the ocean for the very first time. It was something different. We wish to bring back those feelings of adventure and explore vacation getaways with you that will leave you and the family with great memories.

Traveling With Children: Not Orlando Again

Are you the type of parent who gets a sudden twinge when you hear the words “Disneyland” “Disney World” and the dreaded “Orlando.” Don’t get me wrong. I love Disneyland and Disney World. But, not every vacation. So, where else can parents go that suits them and their kids?

Bahamas
